Zuri Zanzibar

Following an international design competition, we were appointed to provide full architectural, engineering and interior design services for a new bare-foot luxury boutique hotel resort on the archipelago of Zanzibar.

The project combines global design flair with sustainable local materials, expertise and craftsmanship.

About Zuri

Zuri Zanzibar is a self-contained village resort comprising 60 individual cabanas and five larger villas, together with restaurants, bars, yoga & meditation spaces and massage cabanas set within a lush tropical spice garden grown as a part of the project.

In response to the client’s brief, the project is both highly ecologically and socially responsive, offering exclusive accommodation that responds to the local context. Guests are surrounded by the aroma and colour of thousands of locally grown plants, with every cabana having views of the garden and ocean.

The sun sets in perfect alignment with a single axis which cascades though the garden leading guests from the arrival experience to the beach with a meditative stroll.

All of buildings are designed to distil the essence of life in Zanzibar, responding to Zanzibar’s culture, climate and geography through the use of locally available materials, the organisation of spaces and strong references to the island’s heritage and craftsmanship.

The project was built by over 600 local people, and NGOs provided many decorative elements including furniture, lighting and seaweed cosmetics.

Zuri Zanzibar is the first hotel in the world to be Awarded EarthCheck’s Prestigious Sustainable Design Gold Certification, setting a new benchmark for sustainability.
