Zanzibar Bwejuu 5* Family Resort
We were appointed to create the masterplan, architectural and interior design for a new 5* leisure resort on the beautiful spice island of Unguja in the Zanzibar archipelago, in Tanzania.
About Bwejuu Family Resort
The project is located on a sloped site on the south-western coast of the island near Bwejuu village, with spectacular ocean views. The resort is inspired by local village architecture, sensitively scaled, contemporary and natural feeling, wrapping guests in a natural and organic landscape.
Contemporary interpretations of traditional house shapes and external shared garden spaces are set within a wild feeling spice garden, providing the comfort of a 5* hotel however in symbiosis with the natural environment and a traditional Zanzibar village experience.
The flatter upper area of the resort is dedicated to families and water experiences, and comprises 50 apartments which are orientated around the pool area. At the heart of the site, with spectacular sea views, a local specialty restaurant provides a unique dining experience.
The mid-section of the site is used for guest arrival and public spaces, including an open lobby, restaurant, business center, conference areas, club house and music hall, each providing stunning views of the poolside and sea, with a meandering garden staircase naturally flowing through the resort connecting all areas to the beach.
The lower sloped area of the resort has a spice garden jungle feel, creating a new village of 65 individual sustainable timber cabanas, each with spectacular sea views. The spice garden flows down to a 40m long swimming pool with restaurant, spa and children’s club on the beach edge.
The resort is designed to function primarily as an off-grid resort, with all water being created from sea water via desalination plant and osmosis cleaning, and all waste water is recycled for fire fighting reserves and finally irrigation of the lush jungle spice gardens. Hot water is provided by solar heating, and electricity for the cabanas is partly provided by PV collectors on roof tops.
The gardens create a lush nurturing environment, and will be planted only with native species to the island. Palm and banana trees define public spaces, frame private gardens for the apartments, and create shade for the cabanas. Areas of the spice gardens are also to be used for education, relaxation, and kitchen use such as fresh salads, fruit, herbs and spices.
